Scale

Scale has always been the name of the game.
Bigger teams, bigger projects, bigger profits. Not too long ago, scale was almost exclusively built on the backs of large groups of people, used against their will or under inequitable conditions (if not outright slavery).
Today, we use technology to scale just as much as we use people.
However, bigger isn’t always better. Technology can be used to scale, but it can also be used to level the playing field. Build something great, yet small, and compete with larger teams.
The more I think about this, has there ever been any purpose in scale for scale’s sake? Scaling mediocrity never provides the expected value, unless scale is the goal. Scaling mediocrity implies that someone else does it better, and we can always get away with doing what the market will bear.
You won’t change the world by making something of questionable value for anyone.
You can’t help but change the world by making something exceptional that solves the needs for a handful of people.
Let’s get to it.
